How to Soften Linen: Simple Ways to Make a New Linen Dress Feel Softer
If your new linen dress feels a little prickly or scratchy, don't worry — that's completely normal.
One of the things people love about linen is that it becomes softer and more comfortable with every wear and wash. Unlike many fabrics that wear out over time, quality linen actually gets better with age.
Why Does Linen Feel Crisp at First?
Linen is made from flax, a natural plant fibre that contains a stiff, glue-like substance called pectin. Pectin gives linen its signature crisp texture and exceptional durability, but it also means new linen can feel stiffer than you might expect.
As the fibres are washed, worn and moved, they gradually relax and become noticeably softer while retaining linen's strength and breathability.
If you'd like to speed up the process, here are some simple methods you can try.
Try a Baking Soda Soak
Baking soda is a natural alkaline mineral that can help relax linen fibres without weakening them.
-
Fill a tub with enough water to fully submerge your linen dress.
-
Add one cup of baking soda and stir until dissolved.
-
Submerge the dress completely.
-
Leave it to soak overnight, or for at least 24 hours.
-
Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
If your linen still feels crisp, you can repeat the process until it reaches your preferred softness.
Air Dry for Longer-Lasting Linen
High heat from a dryer can damage and shrink linen fibers over time.
For the best balance of softness and longevity:
-
Remove your linen dress from the washing machine while it is still slightly damp.
-
Gently shake out the fabric and smooth away any wrinkles.
-
Hang it to air dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area.
This helps preserve the fabric while allowing it to soften naturally over time.
Should You Use Fabric Softener on Linen?
We generally do not recommend using fabric softener on linen.
Traditional fabric softeners work by coating fibres with a thin, waxy layer that creates the feeling of softness. However, on linen this coating can actually prevent the fibres from softening naturally over time. It may also reduce linen's excellent breathability and moisture-wicking properties — two of the reasons linen is so comfortable to wear in warm weather.
Instead, pre-soaking in baking soda and regular washing are the best ways to naturally soften a linen dress while preserving its quality for years to come.
